Biome of Adaptive Relations

Building on the participatory framework of her BAR series, Rao presented a publication titled Biome of Adaptive Relations in 2025 at the Center for Book Arts in New York as part of the exhibition The Space Between Words. The project investigates the intersections of book arts, performance, and installation, tracing how texts, objects, and bodies come together to form relational ecosystems. Rao is curious about how a publication can be a living, evolving system and invites audiences to contribute text to flashcards placed in relation to ceramic sculptures and to reconfigure these arrangements. In doing so, audience members engage in collective meaning-making, actively shaping the work. Drawing on Jacques Derrida’s Of Hospitality, this work explores the shared language of mutualism, parasitism, and hospitality, extending these concepts to immigration and ecological phenomena. The work created a framework to reflect on farming traditions Indigenous to Milpa Alta and Xochimilco in Mexico, which Rao visited in July 2025 as part of the SOMA Summer program, an experience that profoundly shaped the work. These thoughts were echoed in the cocktail and snack.

The bar was tended by Anuradha Rao, the artist’s mother.
