Created in 2024, Diaspore is a sculptural work composed of carved shivon wood from Goa, sand from Goa and the Hudson River, and cotton fabric. Two boat-like forms contain carved shapes drawn from mangrove propagules, reflecting Rao’s research into their global dispersal in collaboration with scientists in Goa and Okinawa. Guided by tides, these seed-like propagules can travel vast distances before taking root in distant geographies.
